Fort George was constructed in 1790 to defend against French and Spanish marauders. The original cannons remain intact. George Town Harbour is the primary port of call for cargo & cruise ships. The steam powered clock tower in George Town was built in 1937 as a monument to King George V, for whom the town was named. Romantic retreats, natural splendor, cultural charm and historical landmarks await the adventurous visitor. West Bay, primarily a residential and farming community, comprises the westernmost region of the island and is home to several secluded beaches and places of interest. Turtle Farm is one of the country's most celebrated attractions. With an average population of over 16,000, the farm produces some 8,000 hatchlings annually. Since its inception in 1980 nearly 30,000 turtles have been released to the sea. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact with a unique and endangered species, and perceive their intriguing life cycle from a tiny egg to a full grown turtle weighing over 500 lbs. A modest admission fee of CI$6.00 helps sustain this vital ecological institution. Fish is aptly named for its netherworld appearance. A quarter acre of exposed ironshore devoid of life presents a unique panoramic photo opportunity. Stop by the post office and send your friends a genuine "postcard from Fish". At the far west end of Seven Mile Beach lies Cemetery Beach. Easily identified by the brightly decorated gravesites, look for the Beach Access sign and follow the short trail to the beach. Sightseeing Tip: Commuter traffic is at its peak weekdays between 8-9am and 5-6pm. Plan your excursions around these periods to facilitate your travel.
